Hi Yujin Ko,

I had intended to write sooner, but you know how time flys, especially when one is in their senior years.

I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at 17 years young, right after high school graduation (May 1948) for a three year enlistment. Of course, the Korean War (President Harry Truman) extended my service an additional year, being honorably discharged 28 June 1952.

While in the Corps, I had the opportunity to graduate from three schools: telephone, electronic and radar, then volunteered to serve in Korea as a radar technician with the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing stationed on a peninsula east of the Pohang airstrip (now shown as Janggigot Lighthouse).

I've revisited Korea on three occasions: 1994, 2000 and 2003. I was amazed  at the appreciation received for my service from the Korean community, although there were demonstrations in opposition from college students in Seoul. But, you must know there is a lasting unique bond between the American servicemen and the Korean people.

On May 27th, I will be visiting the Stanford Campus to pre-screen a major new movie titled "Into the Fire" based on an actual event. During the desperate early days of the war when regular South Korean and American soldiers where engaged elsewhere, high school students defended the South Korean port city of Pohang. Are you aware of this history of the Korean War? I'm not!

Also, do you or your friends know of the "Forgotten People - The Sakhalin Koreans", an aspect of World War 11 and a tragic legacy of the Cold War: the saga of the Koreans who spent 50 year on the Sakhalin Islands at the hands of the Soviet Union? I'll bet your generation was never told of this forced labor during the war! Ask your teacher(s), your Mom and Dad, ask anyone??

I have a booklet titled "A Brief Account of the Korean War" that may be of interest to you and your friends. It's a brief summary of the Korean War (1950-1953) 30 pages long. It would be a good reference for some school. If interested, please send me your "snail mail" address.
